Welcoming Ava (Syracuse University) and Nichelle (UC Berkeley) to our Singapore studio was more than just a standard internship programme. It was a cross-continental experiment. Having two creators join us from California offered a rare chance to look at our own media industry through a fresh set of eyes.

In our latest podcast episode, we sat down to talk about the "culture shocks" of the media industry and the leadership values that drive Minto Studios forward.

Efficiency as a Creative Tool: MRT vs. The California Commute

One of the most relatable realisations we had together involved the simple act of getting to work. In the United States, especially in areas like California, the day is often defined by the "drive." In Singapore, we have the MRT.

While it seems like a small detail, this efficiency actually dictates how we function as a Singapore production house. In a market this fast-paced, we have lean timelines and high expectations. We’ve realised that our ability to move quickly isn’t just a convenience; it’s our greatest creative asset. It allows our boutique team to execute bold visual strategies with a level of precision that larger, slower agencies often struggle to match.

The "Wearer of Many Hats": Specialisation vs. Versatility

We spent a lot of time discussing the structural differences between the US and Singapore media landscapes. In a massive market like the US, there is room for extreme specialisation. You might be "the lighting person" for your entire career.

In Singapore, we don't have that luxury, and we’ve come to view that as a strength. At Minto Studios, we thrive on being versatile. Our team members are trained to understand the full picture of a production. This "many hats" philosophy ensures that our creative business leadership stays agile. We aren't just pushing buttons; we are solving problems.

Why Character is Our Best Business Asset

We’ve always believed that creativity alone isn't enough to build a sustainable studio. During our chat, we touched on some of the harder chapters of our journey, including a $200,000 mistake that fundamentally changed how we operate.

That moment was a turning point for us. It taught our team that integrity and partnership confidence are built on honesty and ownership, especially when things go wrong. These are the values that eventually led us to high-stakes opportunities, such as being trusted with shoots for the Prime Minister of Singapore. When the pressure is at its highest, our clients don't just need a camera operator; they need a partner who can maintain calm leadership under fire.

Grooming the Next Generation of Creative Leaders

Our vision for Minto Studios has always been about grooming future leaders. We want every person who walks through our doors to feel a sense of ownership.

Whether an intern is joining us from a local school or flying in from the United States, our goal is the same: to ensure their time here is a deliberate step toward their own career goals. This podcast was a "live" example of that. Ava and Nichelle didn't just watch; they produced, hosted, and owned the project.

If our team cannot look at a finished project and say, "We did this," then we haven't succeeded as a studio.

Join the Conversation

We are incredibly grateful for the perspectives Ava and Nichelle brought from California to Singapore. This cross-cultural exchange reminded us that while the media world is vast, the principles of good business and human connection remain the same everywhere. A big thank you too to the team at CIEE Singapore for having us on their summer program.
